Marine Hydraulic Cylinder & Piston Repair

Inspection, overhaul and repair of hydraulic cylinders and pistons used on deck machinery, cranes, davits and steering gear.

  • Onboard removal support
  • Workshop overhaul
  • Parts by IMPA

About this service

Cylinders that hold pressure and move smoothly

Hydraulic cylinders and pistons do the pushing and lifting on a ship: crane booms, davits, hatch and steering gear rams and deck machinery. When one leaks, drifts or moves unevenly, Berth Marine assesses it, dismantles it and repairs it.

Work is done onboard where possible, and in our workshops in Tuzla and Kartal when the cylinder must be removed. See also our hydraulic systems repair for the complete system.

What we do

Scope of service

Fault assessment

Assessment of oil leakage, slow or uneven movement and drift under load.

Dismantling and inspection

Inspection of the rod, barrel, piston and gland for wear, scoring and damage.

Seals and packing

Replacement of worn seals and packing, with spare parts identified through the IMPA system.

Repair or replacement

Repair of worn or damaged components, or replacement where repair is not sensible.

Pressure testing

Function and pressure test after assembly, before the cylinder returns to the vessel.

Onboard removal and refit

Support for removing and refitting the cylinder onboard, coordinated with the ship’s crew.

Good to know

Typical signs of a failing cylinder

Oil leaking at the gland, a scored piston rod, slow or jerky movement, or a load that drifts down when it should hold. Report these early: a small seal repair is far cheaper than a failure during operation.

What to send with your request

  • Vessel name and IMO number
  • Port and expected dates (ETA / ETD)
  • Equipment maker and model, if known
  • Short description of the job or defect
  • Photos, drawings or the RFQ list
  • Class or survey requirement, if any

FAQ

Common questions

Can a hydraulic cylinder be repaired onboard?

Simple work such as seal replacement can often be done onboard. Where dismantling needs workshop tools, the cylinder is repaired in our Tuzla or Kartal workshops.

What should I send to get a quotation?

Vessel and port, the equipment the cylinder belongs to, maker and model if known, a description of the problem and photos of the leak or damage.

Need this service onboard?

Send the vessel, port and requirement. We confirm what we can attend and reply with a quotation.
